Evolution and Importance of Dentists

A dentist is a surgeon whose specialization is in dentistry, prevention, diagnosis, treatment of condition and diseases of the oral cavity, and is also known as dental surgeons. The team of dentists provides oral health services. The dental team includes dental technicians, dental assistants, dental hygienist and in some place’s dental therapists.

Different Types Of Degrees That Exists In The Field Of Dentistry:

  • Bachelor of Dental Surgery (B.D.S)
  • Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.MD)
  • Doctor of Dental Surgery (D.D.S)
  • Doctor of Medicine (M.D) (Specialty Program)
The knowledge to become a dentist includes biomedical knowledge, critical thinking, surgical dexterity, analytical skills, management skills, professionalism, and communication.

Pierre Fauchard of France is known as the 'father of modern dentistry.' He was the first person in 1728 to publish a textbook on the techniques and practices related to dentistry. Improvement in the quality of dentistry came with the rise in the number of the dentists. The first dental school was established in the year around the 1840s. Along with the first dental school, the degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or D.D.S came into existence. In response to these new techniques in dentistry and the rise in the number of dentists, the first act regarding dental practice came into the picture.

In the 20th century, the following new techniques and technologies regarding dentistry flourished:

  • The Novocain which means local anaesthesia in the year of 1905
  • Invention of the porcelain crowns in the year of 1903.
  • Invention of toothbrushes made of nylon in the year of 1938.
  • In the year of 1907, the invention of precision cast filling.
  • The invention of water fluoridation in 1945.
  • Dental tools which were air driven were invented in the year of 1957.
  • Invention of lasers in the year of 1960.
The invention of the air driven tools helped in the new high-speed dentistry.

By the natural training of dentists, most of them can perform most of the dental treatments. These treatments include dental restorations, crowns, Bridges, braces, dentures, root canal therapy, gum therapy, oral surgery, performing examinations such as taking x-rays and diagnosis. Moreover, dentists can perform procedures of surgery such as the placement of the dental implant. Sometimes dentists also prescribe medications based on the condition of your gums and teeth. It may include antibiotics, painkillers, fluorides, sedatives, and local anesthetic or any medicine to help in the treatment that arises in the neck or the head.

All the people having DMD and DDS degrees can perform a number of more complex surgeries such as bone grafting, sinus lifts, gingival grafting, implants as well as a range of oral and maxillofacial procedures of surgery. Several people often opt to practice and pursue residencies or opt for post-doctoral degrees in order to augment their abilities.

Several studies have often suggested that the students pursuing dental studies and the dentists have a high rush of burnout. During burnout, the people often experience exhausting, performance becomes less efficient, and they tend to alienate themselves from work. Research and systematic study has identified that the risk factor associated with this condition is often found out on the people who have started practice at a young age, gender, personality type, status of education, high strain at the respective jobs or long working hours in the jobs, the burden of the requirements of the clinical degrees.

Most of the diseases are unique, but some diseases like the poor condition of the oral cavity can lead to deterioration in the general health and vice-versa, which signifies that there is a significant link between cardiovascular and periodontal disease.

Dentistry is a growing field and with the right degree, education qualification and practice one can establish themselves as a renowned dentist.
